Many people are quite rightly wary of using rock salt around concrete and other concrete based materials. Once laid, concrete continues to harden over time. This means that in the first 12-24 years it is relatively 'soft' in comparison to concrete that has been laid for a longer period. New concrete is particularly vulnerable to the damaging effects of rock salt. This form of damage can lead to surface spalling, crumbling and general degradation of the concrete. Once this type of damage occurs it is very difficult to repair and will impact the appearance of the surface. Decking is another surface that can get very slippery so De-Icer is used widely as a decking de-icer for added safety. When the weather improves, you can use our Deck Cleaner to get rid of grime, green growth and algae which also makes it slippery when wet.
The most widely used de-icer for driveways over the years has been sand. Although it will not melt the snow or ice, and will greatly improve traction and a relatively small sprinkling should be effective for a few days. It is also cheap when compared with some other options available. One of the downsides of using sand is that it does not melt snow or ice and can prove to be quite messy.
