There are so many types of stone being used for building and landscaping projects that it's hard to list them all.
Furthermore, the stone is often referred to as natural stone and includes varieties such as Indian sandstone, limestone, granite, slate, travertine and marble.
All types of stone have varying degrees of porosity, which make sealing some of them with a stone tile sealer a sensible option if protection of the surface is important.
The harder stone types include granite, marble and to a lesser degree slate and although a stone tile sealer can be used there are fewer benefits, especially with marble and granite. Marble and granite are very dense substrates which also means they are much less porous than the softer stone types such as sandstone and limestone.
Granite is also an igneous rock with between 20% to 60% quartz by volume, which makes it extremely hard and tough.
It also has very poor permeability, and because water finds it hard to penetrate into granite, it does not tend to attract the growth of mould, algae and lichen, like other more porous substrates.
Marble is very similar to granite, it is a metamorphic rock and very dense in composition and not very porous because of this. For the purpose of this article about applying sealers, we will talk about more porous stone substrates, which mean sealing has more benefits.
