Floors tend to receive the most amount of general wear and tear compared to any other internal surface. Because of this, maintenance and upkeep are a constant consideration as homeowners and commercial property owners looking to protect their investment. To help protect most types of flooring, a floor sealer can be applied to improve the durability of the surface but with so many floor types, it’s important to choose the most suitable floor sealer.
Concrete is one of the most widely used materials for laying floors and is seen everywhere in domestic and commercial properties. Because concrete is generally very porous, it is quite challenging to keep clean and free from water penetration. Porous concrete on floors can cause a number of issues that could be difficult to fix if not dealt with early. Unsealed concrete floors can often retain water and this can lead to mould and mildew appearing over time. This mould and mildew growth should be treated and cleaned off as soon as possible as it can present all sorts of health issues. To avoid this situation in the first place, a concrete floor sealer should be applied once the floor has been laid and the concrete fully cured. A concrete floor sealer will penetrate into the microscopic pores within the surface and make the concrete water-resistant. Once the concrete has been made non-porous it will last a lot longer as well as become more resistant to the growth of mould and mildew which are attracted to damp surfaces. If you are considering sealing a concrete floor, you can use the Essential Concrete Sealer, which is an all-purpose concrete sealer and frequently used as a concrete floor sealer.
Concrete floors are also frequently laid in domestic garages mainly because they are cheap to lay and most people are not too concerned about the look of the floor within a garage. However, concrete on a garage floor is generally no less porous than other unsealed areas of concrete. Â A garage floor is also generally more prone to deterioration than an internal concrete floor as it is generally more exposed to the cold and heat. In addition to this, dust tends to be the big issue on garage floors as the grade of concrete used is normally not that high and surface deterioration can happen quite quickly.
If a garage floor sealer is used it can act as a concrete dust proofer and help eliminate dust particles that break loose from the concrete. These particles can be a health hazard as they are easily breathed in and can cause respiratory issues if they are not dealt with. A garage floor sealer can be applied quickly by roller, sprayer or brush and help prevent any dusting of the concrete which can be unpleasant especially to anyone with breathing difficulties.
Apart from concrete, the other main type of flooring that is used widely in domestic and commercial premises is natural stone. Natural stone flooring is available in various forms and includes limestone, sandstone, slate, granite, marble and travertine amongst others. Most of the natural stone types are porous and this presents a number of issues that can act negatively on the floor. As the stone flooring is often heavily trafficked, if it is left unsealed it can quickly look dirty and grubby. Because it is unsealed and dirt, stains or other contaminants can get into the surface and make cleaning quite difficult.
To ensure a natural stone floor looks clean and tidy at all times, a floor tile sealer should be used to protect it. A floor tile sealer will penetrate into the surface and form a protective barrier, which will help stop water ingress as well as staining. Although, in most cases, a floor sealer will provide protection, on polished stone, porcelain or ceramic tiling it will have limited benefit as it may not penetrate into the surface. If in any doubt about whether to use a sealer or not, our Essential Stone Floor Rejuvenator should be used for cleaning and protecting most types of natural stone. It protects against oil and water stains and will rejuvenate the look of all types of natural stone flooring.
